Echinococcus antibodies

Which test do we use?

Echinococcus granulosus:

  • IgG ELISA.The sensitivity of the test when dealing with liver cysts is 95%. Cross reactions with other cestodes and filaria is possible.
  • Indirect hemaggluttination test (tital Ig) of which the sensitivity is 93% (independent of the location of the cyste) and the specificity is 95% (values as indicated by the manufacturer).

Echinococcus multilocularis:
IgG ELISA. The sensitivity of the test is 90%.

Sampling instructions

For 1 or 2 serological analyses: at least 1 ml serum
For 3 to 5 serological analyses: at least 2 ml serum

Storage conditions

The serum can be sent at room temperature, but the duration of transportation must be reduced as much as possible (avoid weekends or holidays).

Important advice

Echinococcus granulosis:
When the cyst is located in the liver, the sensitivity of the serology is higher than in other places of the body (for example in the lungs).
