Strongyloides stercoralis (Baermann/PCR)

Which test do we use?

Microscopic examination after concentration by Baermann for the detection of larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis.

Real-time PCR to detect Strongyloides spp.

Sampling instructions

Fresh unfixed stool sample (minimum 20 grams) in a clean recipient.

Storage conditions

The sample has to be processed immediately.

Important advice

For the microscopy analysis after concentration by Baermann fresh stool sample (no more than 5 hours old) is needed. The analysis cannot be performed on fixed samples, cooled samples, samples produced after intake of Barium or watery and loose stool samples.
The analysis can only be performed on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The number of excreted larvae is often minimal and intermittent, so repeating the test may prove useful.

A motivation is required for real-time PCR analysis.
