Mycobacteria culture

Which test do we use?

Culture on liquid (BACTEC-MGIT960) and solid (Löwenstein-Jensen, Stonebrink, Ogawa with mycobactin) culture media.

Sampling instructions

Possible on sputum, bronchial lavage, bronchial aspirate, biopsy, pus, gastric fluid, urine, lumbar fluid, puncture fluid.

Storage conditions

Samples are stored in the refrigerator (2-8°C).
Samples can be shipped at room temperature.

Important advice

Samples should not be older than 7 days unless a transport medium (e.g. cetylpyridinium chloride for sputum) was added, which allows preservation at room temperature for up to 1 month.

Gastric fluid sent for culture should arrive at the laboratory within 3 hours. If this is not possible, gastric fluid should be neutralised immediately after collection (100 mg NaHCO3 per 5-10 ml of gastric fluid).
